RailCamp East will be five days in length, headquartered at the University of Delaware and is open to 24 Campers. For three days, campers will visit Amtrak’s Operations Center, Crew Training Center and their locomotive and car shops in Delaware. Campers will have “hands-on” activities and be immersed in the daily operation of a passenger railroad. There will be opportunities to feel the pressure of being a Train Dispatcher on the Northeast Corridor and experience the tension of driving an Acela Train at more than 100mph.
Two days will be spent at the Strasburg Rail Road and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA. One of these two days will involve a train ride to Strasburg, PA where activities have been created to help Campers understand all that is involved in restoring a steam locomotive and a wooden passenger car. Operating Schedule permitting, Campers will go on a freight train to position cars to be transferred to the NSRR. The Campers may also be able to monitor the activities revolved around dispatching and operating a scheduled passenger train. These venues are sure to pique the interest of any young railroad enthusiast.
